Experience

Project Advisor to the Director, Argonne National Laboratory


  • Chaired many project reviews at Argonne and other DOE laboratories, including
    • NSAC (Nuclear Science Advisory Committee) Cost Review of electron Ion Collider Proposals. Chaired at the request of the NSAC Chairman.
    • MaRIE (Materials and Radiation Interactions in Extremes) Director’s Management Cost Schedule Review for CD-0. Chaired at the Los Alamos Director’s Request. Provided separate letter with recommendations.
    • JLab (Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility) 12 GeV Upgrade Director’s Reviews each chaired at the request of the JLab Director.

Project Management Consultant to the Principal Deputy Director General at ITER (the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor)


Oversight of projects at Fermilab: e.g., NOvA, Minerva, Mini-BooNE, Dark Energy Survey

Led teams on three large DOE/SC funded projects to successful completion within cost and on schedule:


  • Project Director for construction of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne, ($500M construction; $850M total project cost).
  • Construction Manager for the US Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) at CERN managed from Fermilab.
  • Project Director for a critical two year period of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, ($1.4B TPC). Staffed the project so the recruited team was able to take the project to a successful completion.

DOE and predecessor agency Field Office and Headquarters technical management oversight: planning, design, budget, construction, fabrication, construction, and commissioning of scientific research facilities and devices.


  • Executive Director of the Site Selection Task Force for the Superconducting Super Collider.
  • Established and implemented the peer review process that became the highly successful DOE Office of Science (SC) Project Management Process.
    • Led peer reviews of all SC projects from 1980-1991.


Senior Development Engineer at the General Electric Nuclear Energy Division Boiling Water Systems Department. Led gamma scan measurements at operating BWRs (boiling water reactors) during refueling outages in Switzerland, Japan, and the United States.
